We tasted this back in August and were simply blown away by how good it was. So much so that along with a couple of friends, we bought a whole pallet. As you do. `We didn’t necessarily have any plans to buy a young organic wine from the other side of the tracks to Lalande de Pomerol but this was so delicious we couldn’t turn it down.

Chateu Les Annereaux has been in the same family since the fourteenth century and the top wines normally sell for around £30-40. The wine we’ve bought lies just outside the boundary of Lalande de Pomerol from a single plot called L’Ane Morte which translates as The Dead Donkey. Don’t let that put you off.

One of the reasons it’s so good is that it contains 20% of a grape called Petit Verdot which adds colour, body but maintains a lovely freshness in the wine. The Hessel family that own the property aren’t ones to follow short terms fashions and this wine has real finesse.

Deep purple -ruby colour with delicious black fruit aromas with a hint of cranberry and chocolate/spice; mouth filling and juicy on the palate with blackberry and ripe strawberry notes, fresh crunchy acidity as well as some sweet vanilla and cedar with silky-smooth, tobacco leaf tannins, integrated with a long fresh finish.
