Chateau Beaucastel must be one of the greatest if not the greatest Chateauneuf du Pape estate. I remember selling the 1978 for all of £6.00 in the first Off Licence I worked in in the 1980's. This was way above my budget. Some things don't change and having planted a vineyard we only get to drink this on very special occasions but it's worth it. I think that the 1995 is now fully mature but the Perrin family who own it seem to think it could be kept for a few more years.
The Wine Spectator magazine describes it as "a ripe core of red currant and raspberry fruit and licorice flavor surrounded by creamy tannins. Plenty of smoke, mineral and tobacco notes chiming in, with plenty of grip still on the finish". We love this wine because it's rich, spicy and ever so slightly funky in a good way. Take care when opening it as it has thrown a sediment and so perhaps stand it up for 48 hours beforehand.
